Baby Girl

Wine for a Godchild

My friend is becoming a godparent soon and was thinking about a meaningful gift to give when the baby is born. He had the great idea of buying a fantastic bottle of wine that could be aged alongside the child and opened on his 21st birthday. Such a unique, classy gift!

He asked me which wine to buy so I gave him some options at slightly different price points. First off, all of the wines I recommended were 2010 Bordeaux. 2010 was a banner year for red Bordeaux. Bordeaux Expert Bill Blatch called it “an embarrassingly good vintage” in his highly sourced Vintage Report. Indeed, some critics are calling it THE greatest Bordeaux vintage ever.

The climate, at times chaotic and extreme, allowed wines from across the price spectrum, from entry-level to the most expensive names, to develop beautifully. The wines have high tannin and acid levels which means they will continue to develop beautifully for decades to come. When baby pops open the cork on his 21st birthday, the wine will be perfectly integrated and magical, properly introducing the boy to the wonders of alcohol. So much better than a Bud Light or too many tequila shots!

Here are three wines I recommend:

2010 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

2010 Cantemerle, Haut-Medoc

2010 Canon-La-Gaffeliere, St-Emilion (pre-arrival)
